I decided to film myself drawing a couple of breakdowns for a fun scene that I am animating for my short film “Fish Lips”, where The Possum is taking a good licking while successfully inflicting some pain on his enemy in the process!  This film is coming along slowly but steadily, and as you can see, I’m on to the animation stage, which for me is the fun stage.  #classicalanimationistakingalongtimetodie #killallofthetrees #pencilandpaper #iamadinosaur

Alphabuddies completed

[fusion_text]While I’m at it, here is the Alphabuddies short that I animated a few years ago, completed.  I’d love to find a way to make 26 of these… one starring each letter.  If anyone knows anyone with some funding, let me know![/fusion_text]

[fusion_text]My wife, Rochelle came up with these characters for a book that she’s working on.  This is part of a pitch to try to get these little guys animated.  The voices are by my daughter Avery and my nieces Anika and Raina, years ago, when they were tiny.[/fusion_text]

The Possum Animated – in progress storyboarding

I’m working on a short Possum film that I’m hoping to fully animate.  This one will take time, I know, I know… but as long as it keeps progressing it’ll get done eventually.  I’m pretty stubborn, so we’ll see what happens. Here are some random board panels I’ve been working on.  The whole short will be about 3 or 4 minutes long as of now, and I’ve probably boarded out a little over half of it. fishlips_3000_0030 fishlips_3000_0033 fishlips_3000_0035 fishlips_3000_0049 fishlips_3000_0068 fishlips_3000_0079 fishlips_3000_0088 fishlips_3000_0089 fishlips_3000_0090 fishlips_3000_0091 fishlips_3000_0092 fishlips_3000_0103 fishlips_3000_0107 fishlips_3000_0130 fishlips_3000_0133 fishlips_3000_0135 fishlips_3000_0149 fishlips_3000_0150 fishlips_3000_0159 fishlips_3000_0021 fishlips_3000_0026 fishlips_3000_0027

Lots going on.

For those of you who look at this blog to see updates on how the latest issue of The Possum is coming along, I thought I better give you a little something and assure you that I haven’t given up on issue #6.

With that said, I have taken a little bit of a detour from The Possum as of late to try to finish a couple other projects that have been kicking around in my head for some time.  I’ve been plugging away on a children’s book, which I’ve been posting some of the pages as they’ve been getting completed….. (some of the pages, not all of them)

I’ve also been trying to finish a short animated piece based off of a children’s book that my wife has been working on.  I’m using it as an excuse to learn how to use Toonboom and it could also be something I might try to develop further into something more some day.  This is where I’m at with it at the moment:

Also, I’ve been chomping at the bit to start making a Possum animated short and I’ve finally started to do some very rough storyboards. The plan is to make it look something like this… or maybe this….  (This one may take a while to finish, but you know what?….. I’m a stubborn man).

There’s a lot of different ideas rattling around inside of my head but I’ll just keep working away at them all and hopefully I won’t go crazy.

P.S.  I didn’t even mention Captain Smith and Broccoli Boy and all the other Possum stories that I have yet to get to (24 hour comic inspirations, Spy Guy team ups, merchandise….)  How is it possible that people get bored?

3 Colours – final animation

3colours from Possum Press on Vimeo.

This is a short piece of animation that I animated for my church. It’s based on a strategy of explaining the gospel using 3 colours (black for sin, red for the blood of Christ, and white for our salvation). The concept was first introduced by Charles Spurgeon in the 1800s as he created “The Wordless Book” which consisted of a book with 3 pages (black, red and white). You can find out more about it at www.3colours.ca

More ‘in class’ animation demos (Featuring Steve Tacola!!)

Here’s a couple more ‘in class’ animation demos I did during a couple lectures for the second year animation class I’m teaching at Seneca College. The first was done to explain the weight lift exercise to the students and try to get them to make their characters lift using the whole body, rather than just using the character’s arms.

And here’s one I did today, using good ol’ Steve Tacola, saying “Not me.” I was explaining how you can spice up your lip sync by putting in little head shakes, and showing them how to do it while keeping the character moving in a certain direction.

Both of these were done in about half an hour under a projector, on paper of course. I shot them later during the work class just for fun, and to see how they turned out. It’s kind of fun animating straight ahead and not having to go back and fix all the mistakes!

Possum Head Rotation

This was something I did as an in class demo for the animation class I’m teaching at Seneca College, here in Toronto. It ain’t perfect, but what do you want for a half hour or so’s work?…… (sheesh).

I thought I’d share it with you, as this is the first Possum animation I’ve gotten around to doing. Hopefully in the future there’ll be a whole lot more!

Little Mermaid 3 pencil tests……. (because everyone knows that the world needed another Little Mermaid movie)

Eh……… it put some food on my family’s table for 6 weeks.  (I only worked on one little song sequence that was going to be used as a trailer for the movie).  This was done a few years ago, for Disney, via Yowza animation, here in Toronto.

I had some sketches from this project that I wanted to post, but I can’t find them right now. If I do find them, I’ll post them, but for now all that you get is some crummy animation.

Magical amount commercial

Here’s a commercial that I did some animation on last year (November 2007) through Yowza animation here in Toronto.  All of the animation up until the 34 second mark was animated by me.

The song is pretty addictive (much like smoking).  My 4 and 2 year olds at the time, were constantly singing this song, which was pretty funny.  Now their favorite songs are “takin’ care of business” by BTO and “wouldn’t it be nice” by the Beach Boys.
